Of Snowmen, Golf and Normans .......reflections on the Christian Booksellers
Convention, 2006
To encourage delegates and retailers to visit more exhibition stands, the
organisers of the Christian Booksellers Convention 2006, asked each exhibitor to
provide a question. Answers were to be collected from the stands and there was
a prize of a television set for whoever got most answers right.
Faced with the question: "Where do snowmen wear Holy Socks?" many of the delegates and retailers
came to the stand looking for socks with snowmen on them. I have to admit I
haven't been able to find any mention of snowmen in the Bible.
The answer was Inverness.
The explanation is as follows: Holy Socks so intrigued a rally driver that both he and his co-driver now
wear Holy Socks when they compete. The first round of the Saab County Scottish Rally
Championship saw Malcolm Proudlock and Steven Clark finish second in the Snowman Rally
in Inverness wearing our newest design - "The Fish."
In a Subaru Impreza, Malcolm would be reaching speeds of one hundred miles an hour
through the forest - it's a great way to travel.

Journeys have always been at the heart of Holy Socks, the practical physical
journeys we make in life but more importantly the spiritual journey which, for
Christians, makes life pilgrimage.
Snow forced us to travel at a much slower rate on our return home from CBC.
Returning via my sister's in North Wales, we drove through snow showers on
Wednesday evening and the lane up to the house was inches deep in snow. More snow
followed overnight and our attempts to get out of the driveway failing, we contented
ourselves with taking life more at the pace suggested by Eugene Petersen in his
talk on Monday evening. We enjoyed the company of sister Kate and her husband Dave,
did a bit of reading, admired the snow-covered Welsh countryside, and marvelled
at the colours of the pheasant which came to be fed in the snow. And of course I
just HAD to get Kate to help me build a snowman and put Holy Socks at his feet.
(He is wearing Pharaoh's well and ill-favoured cows.)
We returned home to south west Scotland, a day later than we had planned, again through
snow storms, the whole episode reminding me of something I had written at the beginning
of my kart racing days, when the journey I had started on was full of learning - about
engines, and settings and rules (?) of the race track. "Learning to enjoy a journey
is something I have had to learn, but it can be quite relaxing, when you get to
the point where you can accept that the destination will be reached - or realise
that the journey is the destination itself."
P.S. note for Malcolm and Steven. Please do not take this as a suggestion that
you should go slower. There are times when God puts the foot on the throttle and
I really do hope and pray that He will allow you to go quick enough to finish first,
whilst, of course, preserving body and soul.
Hello to Mike and Keith of Logos Golf Ministries, who managed to rekindle
my long lost interest in golf. How relaxing and addictive to be beside them.
Nominated for a Norman (sorry Norman).
There we were, having enjoyed that wonderful meal and suddenly, surprisingly find
Holy Socks on the screen, nominated in the "Exhibitor of the year" category.
The award went to Fierce Distribution, congratulations to them.
