Why did you set out in this career? What are your reasons for doing
the job?
The initial reason was that Biblical socks seemed such a good idea which no one
was doing. Since then Holy Socks have developed the idea of life's journey,
which we're all on. For something you put on your feet, Holy Socks are
remarkably disarming and seem to appeal to those who are Christians and
those who aren't committed. I've never been loudly evangelical and the way
in which Christians try to communicate their faith is often more off-putting
than anything else. From reality “learning” shows like Strictly Come Dancing,
we've all become familiar with the idea of “the journey,” our development in
various ways. There's a development to be made spiritually as well, an inward
journey with God which changes us and changes our attitude to others.
In Holy Socks I have a very gentle, quiet but humorous way of talking about the
journey I'm on with God and it seems to connect with people. People look at
Christians and see them as boring – the Christian life is boring only if we
insist on it being so. A journey with God is the most exciting, frustrating,
uplifting, depressing journey you can make. It can fill you with unbelievable peace
and joy but it can also make you so angry you could bang the nails into the cross
yourself. It might sound a bit sadistic, but I'd like others to experience something
of that, or at least to know that that particular journey exists, should
they choose, at any point in their lives, to take that route.
If I have a reason for doing Holy Socks, that's probably it.
